Finding the right school

Where would you start if you or your child - or both - want to take up ballet? Or even if you’ve been dancing for years and you move to a new area or country? Finding the right ballet school and qualified teacher plays a huge role in what type of introduction and experience you’ll have.

A recommendation from a friend or colleague is always good but you have to thoroughly research for yourself to make the right decision. You need to feel comfortable when you enter the studio and confident you trust the teacher.

It’s such an important decision because of the intricacies involved in the training of a discipline such as classical ballet; it requires anatomical knowledge of the developing body to prevent injury, understanding of classical terminology, sound musicality and experience in performing within the profession and/or achieving teaching qualifications.

Creating a list of schools and teachers in surrounding areas to try before committing to any class will definitely help to make an informed decision. Here are some steps to start that list and begin your research;

  • Go online to discover ballet schools in the area. Look on the websites of these schools and check they are established reputable ballet schools following appropriate accreditation systems such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) or the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) for example.

  • Check the teachers’ training, experience and qualifications to ensure they are fully qualified and registered teachers.

  • What systems/awarding bodies are used; is there a gradual build of levels with examinations? Do these qualifications convert into the education/UCAS systems?

  • Watch the videos of previous shows or exhibitions.

  • Read the success stories of past students and the testimonials.

  • Check they reach vocational level training leading into the profession or teacher training.

  • Go along and see the school and meet the teachers, try the class - some schools offer trail classes. Get a feel for the school/studio see what level the students are there, how they train and interact. Check the atmosphere of the learning environment.
